A double chin refers to the amount of skin that becomes exposed under the chin and around the neck. Many people feel unhappy with the appearance of this concern as it can cause the face to appear heavy and unbalanced. This is a concern that can affect both men and women, and is not necessarily age-related.

Known medically as submental fat, a double chin is primarily caused by a combination of factors. Genetics need to be considered as playing a significant role, as some individuals will be more prone to developing a double chin than others. Excess fat and excess skin are the main considerations with this concern, which can sometimes appear in combination. Excess fat may be the result of fat stores in the submental area, developing through a poor diet and excess calories being regularly consumed. When ageing is a contributor, muscle and skin laxity cause the skin to sag or hang around the neck, which can also provide a pocket for any fatty deposits to settle into. Poor posture can weaken neck muscles, exacerbating the appearance of a double chin. Additionally, hormonal changes and certain medical conditions may also influence fat distribution.

The interplay of genetics, lifestyle, and ageing results in the development of a double chin, impacting facial aesthetics and prompting individuals to seek non-surgical or surgical interventions for improvement.
