Thumb CMCJ (Carpometacarpal Joint) replacement is a surgical procedure that provides a solution for the pain and functional issues associated with severe arthritis or degeneration of the thumb’s biomechanisms. Thumb CMCJ Replacement procedure is most commonly performed on older patients, and works to enhance hand function and reduce pain.

The surgical process begins with careful evaluation at a pre-operative consultation to confirm the diagnosis and assess the severity of joint damage. During the procedure at his clinic in Leeds, Mr Waseem Bhat removes damaged cartilage and bone from the joint surfaces at the base of the thumb and replaces them with prosthetic components. This aims to restore smooth joint movement and function.

Surgery is typically performed under regional or general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of surgery and the patient’s preference.

Following CMCJ replacement, patients may experience initial discomfort, swelling, or stiffness. Pain medication helps manage discomfort, and hand elevation aids in reducing swelling. A splint or brace will be used temporarily to support the thumb during healing. Hand therapy plays a crucial role in regaining strength, mobility, and function.
