Joint Replacements / Fusion
Joint replacement and fusion surgeries are procedures aimed at addressing severe joint damage or conditions causing chronic pain and limited mobility. The procedure offers a safe and effective solution to enhance joint function and alleviate any associated discomfort.
Joint replacement involves removing damaged joint surfaces and replacing them with prosthetic components made from metal, plastic, or ceramic. This surgery is similar to those performed for hips, knees, or shoulders. Conversely, fusion surgery aims to fuse adjacent bones in the joint, eliminating motion and reducing pain. It’s often employed for small joints like the wrist or ankle.
The surgical process begins with thorough preoperative assessments, including imaging and medical evaluations, to determine the best surgical approach. Surgery is usually performed under local, regional or general anaesthesia. During joint replacement, Mr Waseem Bhat meticulously removes damaged components, prepares the bone, and secures the artificial joint. Fusion surgery involves removing damaged cartilage and stabilising the joint using screws, plates or rods to promote fusion.
Post-surgery, patients undergo rehabilitation involving physical therapy and exercises tailored to the specific joint. Pain management, wound care, and activity modifications are crucial during the recovery period. Patients gradually resume activities, following Mr Bhat’s guidance to avoid stressing the joint.
Regular follow-ups monitor healing and assess progress. Adhering to postoperative instructions, including rehabilitation and lifestyle adjustments, is vital for optimal recovery. Joint replacement or fusion surgeries aim to restore joint function, reduce pain, and improve quality of life for individuals with severe joint conditions, requiring thorough aftercare to ensure successful outcomes.

Frequently asked questions
Am I suitable for joint replacements / fusion?
You may be considered for joint replacements / fusion if damaged joints, or a medical condition (such as arthritis) is causing consistent joint pain and decreased functionality. A thorough pre-operative consultation with Mr Bhat will establish your suitability for surgery.
Are joint replacements / fusion safe?
These procedures are considered safe if a comprehensive assessment that discusses your general health and medical history deems you suitable for surgery.
Will it hurt?
The joints are likely to be sensitive even before we consider surgery, therefore, the procedure itself will cause some degree of pain. During your pre-operative assessment we will discuss which form of anaesthesia will be most suitable: local, regional or general.
How soon after surgery can I wash?
You may be able to shower 24-48 hours after surgery, making sure you keep the dressings dry. Immersing the wounds in water is not recommended for 2-3 weeks, so bathing and swimming should be avoided.
What results can I expect?
It can take several months to fully recover from this surgery, depending on which joints were operated on. Patients can expect the treated area to be less uncomfortable and stiff, with an improvement to mobility and overall functioning. Results often last for many years.

I plucked up courage to have upper blepharaplasty with Waseem Bhat, I had two zoom consultations before going ahead with surgery.
I was very nervous but Waseem and Nicki made me feel completely at ease during surgery. Everything was explained to me and I felt in safe hands. I’ve just returned to the clinic for my sutures removing and even though it’s early days I can already see such an improvement I’m extremely pleased. It boosts your confidence and makes you feel so much happier with yourself.
