Thumb CMCJ Replacements
Thumb CMCJ (Carpometacarpal Joint) replacement is a surgical procedure that provides a solution for the pain and functional issues associated with severe arthritis or degeneration of the thumb’s biomechanisms. Thumb CMCJ Replacement procedure is most commonly performed on older patients, and works to enhance hand function and reduce pain.
The surgical process begins with careful evaluation at a pre-operative consultation to confirm the diagnosis and assess the severity of joint damage. During the procedure at his clinic in Leeds, Mr Waseem Bhat removes damaged cartilage and bone from the joint surfaces at the base of the thumb and replaces them with prosthetic components. This aims to restore smooth joint movement and function.
Surgery is typically performed under regional or general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of surgery and the patient’s preference.
Following CMCJ replacement, patients may experience initial discomfort, swelling, or stiffness. Pain medication helps manage discomfort, and hand elevation aids in reducing swelling. A splint or brace will be used temporarily to support the thumb during healing. Hand therapy plays a crucial role in regaining strength, mobility, and function.
Regular follow-ups with Mr Bhat and his team in Leeds will monitor healing and assess progress. Adhering to postoperative instructions, including hand exercises, activity modification, and avoiding excessive stress on the thumb, is essential for optimal recovery. CMCJ replacement aims to alleviate pain, restore thumb function, and improve hand mobility for individuals affected by thumb arthritis, necessitating thorough aftercare to ensure successful outcomes and improved hand function.

Frequently asked questions
Am I suitable for CMCJ replacement?
A pre-operative assessment will establish your suitability for surgery. To be considered, you will need to have a trapezium bone that is large enough to accommodate a replacement, as well as adjacent joints being free from arthritis.
Is CMCJ replacement safe?
This procedure is considered safe, and offers an effective solution with low risk of complications.
Will it hurt?
Having experienced pain and discomfort for some time, the results of surgery will provide long term relief from associated symptoms. The procedure will be performed using general or regional anaesthetic, and pain relieving medication will manage any post-operative discomfort.
How soon after surgery can I wash?
The dressing will need to remain in place for 10 days, and the treatment site will need to be kept dry. When washing, you’ll need to be careful not to disturb the wounds, patting the area dry with a soft towel.
What results can I expect?
It can take 4-6 weeks for the treated area to recover, and for functionality to resume. The outcome is often long term.
Testimonials
What our patients say...
I plucked up courage to have upper blepharaplasty with Waseem Bhat, I had two zoom consultations before going ahead with surgery.
I was very nervous but Waseem and Nicki made me feel completely at ease during surgery. Everything was explained to me and I felt in safe hands. I’ve just returned to the clinic for my sutures removing and even though it’s early days I can already see such an improvement I’m extremely pleased. It boosts your confidence and makes you feel so much happier with yourself.
