Rheumatoid Hands

Rheumatoid hands, a manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), present with swollen, stiff joints, deformities such as ‘swan-neck’ or boutonniere deformities, and reduced range of motion. These symptoms can significantly impair hand function, limiting daily activities such as gripping objects, typing, or performing fine motor tasks. The condition can also impact quality of life, leading to disability and decreased independence. Early diagnosis and appropriate management strategies, including medication and physical therapy, can help mitigate these implications and improve hand function.

Rheumatoid hands result from rheumatoid arthritis (RA), an autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues, primarily affecting the joints. In RA, inflammation of the synovial membrane lining the joints leads to swelling, pain, and stiffness. Over time, this inflammation can erode cartilage and bone, causing joint deformities characteristic of rheumatoid hands. The exact cause of rheumatoid arthritis remains unknown, but genetic predisposition, environmental factors, and hormonal changes are thought to play a role. Early diagnosis and treatment with disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) can help manage symptoms and prevent further joint damage, improving the prognosis for individuals with rheumatoid hands.

Mr Waseem Bhat is an experienced hand surgeon who can recommend a suitable surgical intervention for rheumatoid hands which aim to alleviate pain, correct deformities, and improve hand function. Procedures may include joint replacement / fusions or CMCJ replacements to re-establish damaged joints with prosthetics, or osteotomy to realign bones. Through these surgeries, Mr Bhat aims to restore joint stability, reduce pain, and enhance hand mobility and function. While outcomes vary depending on factors like disease severity and individual health, patients typically experience improved hand function, reduced pain, and enhanced quality of life post-surgery. Physical therapy and ongoing medical management are often integral to optimise outcomes and minimise the risk of further complications developing.
