Cubital Tunnel Release

Cubital tunnel release is a surgical procedure addressing cubital tunnel syndrome, a condition where the ulnar nerve in the elbow becomes compressed, leading to numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand and fingers. This procedure aims to alleviate these symptoms by relieving pressure on the nerve.

The surgical process involves techniques to create more space for the ulnar nerve. One common method is in-situ decompression, where Mr Waseem Bhat releases tight structures compressing the nerve without physically moving the nerve. Alternatively, Mr Bhat might perform a medial epicondylectomy, removing a small piece of the bone to increase the tunnel’s size and reduce nerve compression. In some instances the nerve may need to be transposed. The technique used for cubital tunnel release is decided based on factors such as the severity of nerve compression, anatomical considerations, and individual patient needs. This will be discussed at the pre-operative consultation.

Post-surgery, it is expected for you to experience initial discomfort, swelling, or tenderness around the elbow. Pain medication helps manage discomfort, and a splint may be used to protect the elbow during healing. Physical therapy or exercises aid in restoring strength and mobility. You can gradually resume light activities, with full recovery typically taking several weeks to months.

Regular follow-ups with Mr Bhat and his team monitor healing and assess progress. Adhering to postoperative instructions, including proper elbow care, exercises, and avoiding activities that strain the area, is crucial for optimal recovery. Cubital tunnel release offers effective relief for individuals affected by cubital tunnel syndrome, restoring hand function and reducing symptoms, enhancing overall quality of life.
