Trigger Release
Trigger release surgery aims to address trigger finger or trigger thumb, a condition causing the affected digit to lock or catch, resulting from inflamed tendons within the sheath. This condition is more common in women over 40, and people with certain medical conditions, including those who are affected by Dupuytren’s contracture.
The surgical procedure begins with an assessment to confirm the diagnosis and severity of the condition. Trigger release surgery is often performed under local anaesthesia, allowing you to remain awake while numbing the surgical area. Mr Waseem Bhat makes a small incision at the base of the affected finger or thumb, accessing the tendon sheath. Using precise techniques, he continues by extending the sheath opening or releasing the constricted portion of the tendon, allowing smoother tendon movement without catching or locking.
Post-surgery, you are likely to experience mild discomfort, swelling, or tenderness in the operated area. Pain medication helps manage discomfort, and keeping the hand elevated aids in reducing swelling. A splint may be used temporarily to support the finger or thumb during the healing process. Gentle exercises and gradually resuming hand use are recommended to restore mobility.
Regular follow-ups with Mr Bhat and his team monitor healing and assess progress. Adhering to postoperative instructions, including proper hand care, exercises, and avoiding activities that strain the hand, is crucial for optimal recovery. Trigger release surgery effectively alleviates symptoms associated with trigger finger or thumb, restoring pain-free finger movement and improving hand function for enhanced daily activities and quality of life.

Frequently asked questions
Am I suitable for trigger release surgery?
Trigger finger or thumb will need to be diagnosed before you are considered for trigger release surgery. This can be done through a visit to your GP, or by arranging a booking with Mr Bhat. After an in-depth examination of your concerns, Mr Bhat will recommend a suitable action plan for treatment.
Is trigger release surgery safe?
Trigger release surgery is considered a safe and affected procedure for those affected by trigger finger or trigger thumb. The surgery provides relief from the condition’s associated symptoms, restoring usual functioning and improving quality of life.
Will it hurt?
A local anaesthetic will ensure you don’t feel any pain during the operation. The treated area and palm of the hand may feel tender for up to 2 weeks after surgery, which can be managed with recommended pain relieving medication.
How soon after surgery can I wash?
The dressing will usually need to be left on for around 5-7 days. After this time you should be able to wash the area using warm water and gentle products, avoiding harsh rubbing actions.
What results can I expect?
We expect full movement of your affected digit to resume within 2 weeks. After 3 months you should find that any signs of trigger finger / thumb have completely disappeared, with a return of the condition being uncommon.

What our patients say...
I was really nervous about having a procedure on my face.
Straight away after meeting Dr Waseem Bhat and his assistant I felt at ease. I’m really happy I chose to travel to Coppergate and Dr Waseem for my surgery as my results are exactly what I wanted. Thank you so much

I plucked up courage to have upper blepharaplasty with Waseem Bhat, I had two zoom consultations before going ahead with surgery.
I was very nervous but Waseem and Nicki made me feel completely at ease during surgery. Everything was explained to me and I felt in safe hands. I’ve just returned to the clinic for my sutures removing and even though it’s early days I can already see such an improvement I’m extremely pleased. It boosts your confidence and makes you feel so much happier with yourself.
