Prominent Ears

Prominent ears may also be referred to as ‘bat ears’, large ears, protruding ears or ‘stick-out ears’. This can be a particularly noticeable condition, especially if the affected person prefers to keep their hair short. Hats and hair styling can help to conceal this concern, which is often the cause of significant embarrassment and self-consciousness. Many people affected by prominent ears will express having been taunted by others about the appearance of their ears, especially as a child or young person.

It is very likely that a person has been affected by prominent ears from birth, as in most cases it is due to genetic or developmental factors. The primary cause is an abnormality in the structure or positioning of the ear cartilage, particularly the antihelical fold or the conchal bowl. When these structures fail to develop or fold properly, the ears may protrude prominently from the head. In some cases, prominent ears may be inherited, passed down through family genetics. Other contributing factors may include excessive cartilage growth, insufficient development of the ear’s folds, or an imbalance in the ear’s size relative to the head.

While prominent ears are primarily a cosmetic concern, they can impact self-esteem and may be corrected through surgical procedures like otoplasty. Mr Waseem Bhat is a talented consultant plastic and reconstructive surgeon who has performed many otoplasty procedures. By making an incision behind the ear, Mr Bhat can reshape or remove excess cartilage. The ear can then be repositioned closer to the head, creating a natural appearance. Both adults and children can undergo otoplasty, however, a child will need to be over the age of 5 to allow for sufficient development of the ears.
