Otoplasty / Prominent Ear Correction

Otoplasty, commonly known as prominent ear correction surgery, is a cosmetic procedure aimed at reshaping and repositioning ears that protrude prominently from the head. It’s often sought by individuals looking to improve the appearance of their ears or address congenital ear deformities.

The procedure typically involves making incisions behind the ear, allowing Mr Bhat access to the cartilage. Depending on the specific concern, he may reshape the cartilage, pin back protruding ears, or adjust their position to achieve a more natural and balanced appearance. Sutures are often used to secure the cartilage in its new position before the incisions are closed. The procedure is tailored to meet your needs and can be performed on one or both of the ears. If one ear is more protruding than the other, surgical techniques will be adapted accordingly to achieve the required symmetry / balanced appearance.

Post-operative care involves following the instructions of Mr Bhat and his team, which may include keeping the head elevated, avoiding strenuous activities, and wearing a headband or special garment to aid in maintaining the newly shaped ears’ position. Patients are advised to refrain from activities that could put pressure on the ears to ensure proper healing.

Recovery times vary, but you may be able to return to your routine activities within a week or two. Regular follow-up appointments allow Mr Bhat and his team to monitor the healing process and provide guidance on proper care. These are typically arranged at 1 week, 6 weeks and 3 months after surgery.

Frequently asked questions

In most cases protruding / prominent ears are present from birth, affecting a person from childhood. Feeling unhappy with the appearance of this feature and a lack of confidence due to unwanted attention, is often the reason otoplasty is requested. Mr Bhat will ask that you attend an in-depth consultation, which includes an examination of the ears, before deciding if you are a suitable candidate for surgery.

Otoplasty has been performed for many years, and results for patients are often life changing. The techniques used are safe and effective when carried out by a qualified, experienced surgeon.

To ensure you feel nothing during the surgery we will use a local anaesthetic, alternatively it can be carried out under a general anaesthetic. Pain relief is usually required during the recovery period.

You should wait until after the dressings have been removed before showering, which will be decided at the first follow-up appointment (1 week after surgery). Until this time you should wash your face and neck using gentle motions so as not to disturb any sutures and delay healing.

Over time, as swelling subsides and the ears heal, you will notice an improved appearance and newfound confidence in the balanced and harmonious look of their ears.
