Scars
Scars are the visible marks left on the skin after the healing of a wound or injury. They result from the body’s natural response to tissue damage, where collagen fibres form to repair and replace damaged skin. Various factors influence the type of scar that develops, including the depth and size of the wound, genetics, and the individual’s healing process.
There are different types, each with distinct characteristics. Hypertrophic scars are raised and often red, remaining within the boundaries of the original wound. Keloid scars, on the other hand, extend beyond the initial injury site and can be itchy or painful. Atrophic scars, commonly associated with acne, create a sunken or depressed appearance. Contracture scars occur when skin tightens during healing, potentially restricting movement, while pitted scars result from the loss of tissue.
Scars can be caused by various incidents such as surgeries, burns, cuts, or acne. Their impact on appearance depends on factors like location, size, and type. While some may fade and become less noticeable over time, others can be permanent and affect one’s self-esteem. Embracing self-acceptance and recognizing that they tell unique stories of resilience can also contribute to a positive perspective on their presence. Ultimately, understanding scar types, their causes, and available treatments empowers individuals to make informed decisions about managing their skin’s appearance.
Dermatological interventions, such as laser therapy or topical treatments, can help improve the appearance. However, Mr Waseem Bhat can take a surgical approach to reducing their size and visibility. Scar revision uses suitable incision techniques to remove excess or thickened tissue, restitching the wound in a smaller, neater fashion. In addition, contracted scarring that often restricts movement, can be relieved through scar revision surgery.
