Sagging Breasts

Sagging Breasts

Sagging breasts are often associated with large, heavy breasts. However, small breasts can also sag. This concern is characterised by breasts that sit lower on the chest wall than desired, which may develop over time depending on its cause. When sagging breasts are also particularly large and heavy, a range of other concerns may be troublesome, including: back pain, shoulder pain, poor posture and nipple concerns.

Sagging breasts, also known as breast ptosis, can result from a combination of factors, primarily influenced by genetics, ageing, and lifestyle. Over time, the skin loses elasticity due to a natural decline in collagen and elastin production, contributing to breast tissue sagging. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can see an increase in fat and breast tissue, further stretching the ligaments and skin, affecting breast shape. Smoking is another factor linked to reduced skin elasticity, potentially accelerating breast sagging.

Weight gain, and an increase in body fat affecting the breasts can cause the breasts to become larger in size. The increased weight of the breasts can pull down on the breasts, causing them to hang lower on the chest wall. However, when weight is then lost, particularly in cases of significant weight loss, a reduction in breast volume can result in excess skin and subsequent sagging (even if the breasts seem small in size). Poorly supportive bras or inadequate breast support during physical activities may also contribute.

While genetics and ageing are inevitable factors, it’s important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This usually includes regular exercise and a balanced diet which can help to mitigate sagging to some extent, along with proper breast support. Mr Waseem Bhat can advise a surgical intervention such as a breast lift (mastopexy) or breast reduction, for those seeking to address sagging concerns. This can be combined with mastopexy augmentation (incorporating the insertion of implants to lift and enlarge the breasts), and / or nipple correction to improve their overall appearance.
