Breast Reduction
Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at reducing the size, weight, and reshaping of overly large breasts. Undergoing this surgery can help to alleviate physical discomfort and enhance body proportions. It’s often sought by individuals experiencing issues associated with large, heavy breasts, including: chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain, postural problems, or restricted physical activity due to the size and weight of their breasts.
The surgical process involves several steps. Mr Bhat makes incisions to remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, reshaping the breasts to achieve a more proportionate size and contour. Nipple-areola complexes are often repositioned to a higher position for aesthetic and functional purposes. The incisions are then meticulously closed, resulting in a more lifted and reduced breast appearance.
Post-surgery, you might experience temporary discomfort, swelling, and bruising in the treated area. Pain medication helps manage any discomfort, and wearing a supportive bra aids in recovery. Rest and avoiding strenuous activities are recommended initially, gradually resuming normal activities as guided by Mr Bhat and his team. Regular follow-ups ensure proper healing and address any concerns.
Breast reduction surgery can significantly improve physical symptoms and enhance quality of life for individuals with disproportionately large breasts. It’s important to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss expectations, risks, and aftercare. While scarring is inevitable, the incisions are typically placed strategically to minimise visible scarring over time. Adhering to postoperative instructions, including proper wound care and follow-up visits, helps optimise results and ensures a smooth recovery.

Frequently asked questions
Am I suitable for breast reduction?
Each case is assessed individually, and suitability will be determined through a thorough assessment of the breasts and your specific medical details.
Is breast reduction safe?
Breast reduction surgery is a safe and effective procedure that helps to improve both appearance and physical comfort. Mr Bhat and his team are highly trained and experienced and do all they can to ensure your welfare.
Will it hurt?
Like all other surgical breast procedures, breast reduction can cause some significant discomfort. General anaesthetic is found to be the most suitable form of pain relief, and you will be fully asleep throughout. You can manage post-operative discomfort through the use of over-the-counter or prescribed pain relieving medication.
How soon after surgery can I wash?
Your wounds will need to be kept dry for up to 3 days after surgery, after which you can take a shower that doesn’t use powerful jets. You may need to wait a little longer before having a bath or going swimming, as immersing the wounds in water too soon can disturb them. Mr Bhat and his team will provide recommendations regarding these issues at your follow-up appointments.
What results can I expect?
A noticeable reduction in the size, shape and positioning of the breasts on the chest wall can be achieved through a breast reduction procedure. In addition, any back, shoulder or neck pain should also start to ease, and posture may improve. Swelling may take several weeks to subside, allowing for the final result to become apparent. Removing breast tissue and excess skin usually have long term results, but it would not be uncommon for breast size to increase in the future as tissues can regrow. This will be discussed at consultation.

I plucked up courage to have upper blepharaplasty with Waseem Bhat, I had two zoom consultations before going ahead with surgery.
I was very nervous but Waseem and Nicki made me feel completely at ease during surgery. Everything was explained to me and I felt in safe hands. I’ve just returned to the clinic for my sutures removing and even though it’s early days I can already see such an improvement I’m extremely pleased. It boosts your confidence and makes you feel so much happier with yourself.
