Breast Implant Removal / Exchange

Breast implant removal or exchange is a surgical procedure involving the removal, replacement, or adjustment of breast implants. It’s chosen by individuals seeking to change the size, type, or position of their implants due to various reasons such as: dissatisfaction with size and / or shape, complications related to the implants (such as capsular contracture) or to replace implants that have reached their shelf-life.

The surgical process involves several approaches. For implant removal, the surgeon makes incisions (usually at the original sites) to remove the existing implants. In some cases this will require performing an additional procedure (capsule removal, or capsulectomy) if there’s scar tissue or implant malposition. When breast implant exchange is also required, the current implants are replaced with new ones, often addressing size, shape, or material preferences. Adjustments to implant size or position can be made during exchange surgeries, and if a breast uplift (mastopexy) is also desired, this can be carried out as part of the same procedure.

Post-surgery, you may experience mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising, managed with prescribed pain medication. Wearing a supportive bra aids in recovery and reduces swelling. Rest and avoiding strenuous activities are recommended initially, gradually returning to normal routines as guided by the surgeon. Regular follow-ups made at 1 week, 6 weeks and 3 months ensure proper healing and address any concerns.

Breast implant removal or exchange surgeries are chosen for various reasons, including changes in aesthetic preferences, implant-related complications like rupture or capsular contracture, or lifestyle adjustments. While some scarring may occur, proper incision care minimises visible scarring over time.

Frequently asked questions

In many cases, implant removal is not required until the implants are 10-15 years old. This can often influence the type of techniques used in the surgery, when implant size and the addition of an uplift procedure (mastopexy) may also need to be considered. Changes to the shape and size of the breasts, as well as discomfort, should be assessed by Mr Bhat as complications can occasionally develop.

Adhering to postoperative instructions, including proper wound care and follow-up visits, helps optimise results and ensures a smooth recovery. The procedure is considered to v= be safe, and in some cases is necessary for your health and well-being.

You may experience similar discomfort to the original implant insertion / augmentation procedure. However, as the surgery is fairly straightforward a general anaesthetic is not always necessary. As with the previous surgery, pain relieving medication is usually required in the days and wells that follow the procedure.

You can shower on the 3rd day after your surgery, however, you may be advised to keep your back facing the water. When washing you should be careful not to immerse the wounds in water, and pat the area dry with a soft towel.

The results may take several months to fully develop, allowing for all side effects to subside and the breasts to settle into place. Whether implants have been exchanged or not, Mr Bhat aims to maintain a natural shape and positioning on the chest.
