Fat Transfer To Breasts

Fat transfer for breast augmentation, also known as autologous fat transfer or natural breast augmentation, is a surgical procedure that enhances breast size and shape using the patient’s own fat cells. These are harvested from areas with excess fat, such as the abdomen, thighs, or hips (which can be used in combination if necessary). It offers a natural alternative to implants for those seeking modest increases in breast volume – 1 or 2 cup sizes.

The surgical process involves several stages. Fat is first extracted through liposuction from donor sites on the body. This involves the insertion of a cannula into the skin which is moved around to break up the fat so it can be sucked out through the attached tube. The collected fat cells are then purified and processed before being injected into the breasts to enhance their size and contour. Mr Bhat meticulously injects small amounts of fat into various layers of the breast tissue to achieve the desired volume and shape.

After the procedure, patients may experience mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising at both the liposuction and breast injection sites. Pain medication helps manage any discomfort, and wearing a supportive bra aids in recovery. Patients are advised to rest and avoid strenuous activities during the initial recovery phase. Follow-up appointments made at 1 week, 6 weeks and 3 months after surgery ensure proper healing and address any concerns.

Fat transfer for breast augmentation offers natural-looking results and avoids the use of artificial implants. However, not all transferred fat cells survive, and multiple sessions might be necessary to achieve the desired enhancement. Adhering to postoperative instructions, including proper wound care and follow-up visits, helps optimise results and ensures a smooth recovery.

Frequently asked questions

Many people are opting for fat transfer to enhance breast shape and size, over the insertion of implants. Suitability for surgery will be determined by the results of assessments on your health, medical history, expected results and reasons for treatment. You’ll also need to have a sufficient amount of excess fat in another area of the body, required for extraction.

Patients should consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon (such as Mr Bhat) to assess candidacy, discuss expectations, and understand the potential risks and benefits.

Both parts of the fat transfer process can be uncomfortable, which is why Mr Bhat often chooses to use a general anaesthetic. This means you will be completely asleep and won’t feel a thing. Pain relief is usually required in the days and weeks that follow the procedure.

Showering is possible after 24 hours. However, ensure you avoid powerful jets, hot water and harsh products. Steri-strips or sutures will need extra care, so you’ll need to pat-dry using a soft towel.

The results can take up to 6 months to fully develop, but will last for many years. A natural shape and size is achieved through strategic placing of injections, and the breasts will also have a more natural feel. Recovery time is usually quicker than having implants inserted, with swelling easing within a couple of weeks.
