Ganglion Excision

Ganglion excision is a surgical procedure aimed at removing ganglion cysts. These are non-cancerous fluid-filled lumps commonly found near joints or tendons, most commonly affecting people between the ages of 15 and 40. The procedure is a safe and effective solution for relieving discomfort or pain and improving joint function, as well as eliminating any aesthetic concerns.

The surgical process begins with a thorough examination to confirm the diagnosis and evaluate the cyst’s size and location. Surgery may be performed under local or general anaesthesia, depending on the cyst’s complexity and your individual preference. Mr Waseem Bhat is an experienced surgeon whose technique involves making an incision near the cyst, carefully excising it along with the cyst wall to prevent recurrence. For deeper-seated cysts, arthroscopic techniques may be used. This usually involves making smaller incisions and the use of a camera for guidance and precision.

Post-surgery, patients might experience mild discomfort, swelling, or stiffness in the treated area. Pain medication helps manage discomfort, and keeping the area clean and protected aids in proper healing. Rest and avoiding strenuous activities involving the affected area are advised initially. Physical therapy or hand exercises may be recommended to regain strength and mobility.

Regular follow-ups with Mr Bhat and his team monitor healing and assess any concerns. Adhering to postoperative instructions, including proper wound care and activity modification, is vital for optimal recovery. Ganglion excision offers effective relief for individuals who are affected by cyst-related symptoms, restoring function and alleviating discomfort, promoting improved joint mobility and overall quality of life.

Frequently asked questions

Ganglion cysts are common concerns that usually don’t cause any harm. However, they can often be uncomfortable and may lead to weakness in the affected area, which is when removal may be advised. Aesthetic concerns due to the size and visibility of the cyst can also lead to the request of an excision procedure.

This is considered to be a minor procedure that is safe, with low risk of complications. The procedure is fairly straightforward and many people achieve a successful result.

The procedure will be carried out using a local, regional or general anaesthetic to eliminate any discomfort. Although patients commonly experience a relatively pain free recovery, pain relieving medication can be taken in the days that follow if any discomfort is felt.

Mr Bhat may advise that you wait until the dressings have been removed before washing the treated area. This will allow for the wounds to seal, and reduce the risk of delayed healing.

Ganglion cysts cause a lump to form under the skin, which can grow and become noticeable and / or uncomfortable. Removal of the cyst will help to alleviate any associated tenderness and functionality issues, as well as restoring the skin’s even surface. A full recovery is expected within 4-6 weeks, and results are often long term.
