Sagging Skin
Sagging skin on the face affects both men and women as they get older. This concern is characterised by a loss of elasticity and firmness, leading to a downward shift of facial features. The skin may appear loose, creating folds and wrinkles, particularly around the jawline, cheeks, and neck. Sagging skin can give the face a tired or drooping appearance, impacting overall facial aesthetics and contributing to the signs of ageing.
Sagging skin on the face is primarily caused by the natural ageing process. This is marked by a decline in collagen and elastin production which occurs at a rate of around 1-1.5% each year from around the age of 20+ years. Collagen, responsible for skin structure, and elastin, providing skin elasticity, diminish with age, leading to a loss of skin firmness. Environmental factors, such as prolonged sun exposure and smoking, can accelerate collagen breakdown and will therefore exacerbate sagging. Gravity also plays a role, pulling the skin downward over time. Genetics, poor skincare, and lifestyle choices contribute to the severity of sagging skin. Additionally, reduced muscle tone and fat redistribution further impact facial contours. The cumulative effect of these factors results in sagging skin, creating wrinkles, jowls, and a less defined jawline.
When approaching surgically, Mr Waseem Bhat assesses the extent of sagging before recommending the most suitable approach. A facelift addresses the mid and upper face, tightening the skin by trimming away any excess skin and tissues. This will help to lift and smooth the complexion for long term rejuvenation. To make a significant improvement that includes more of the lower face and neck, a face and neck lift may be a more suitable approach. Both these procedures can be combined with other facial surgeries, such as blepharoplasty or brow lift, for more impactful results.
