Upper Eyelid Excess / Droopy Eyelids

Droopy eyelids occur as the upper lids develop excess skin that sags lower than in one’s youth. The upper eyelid will start to cover over the main part of the eye, giving the overall appearance a tired look. Like other concerns derived from the ageing process, droopy eyelids can be a progressive concern, becoming more prominent over time. In severe cases (usually with much older people) the eyelid can cover a significant amount of the eye, leading to visual issues.

It’s common for people in their 40’s to be affected by this concern, as ageing skin on the face begins to take effect. In addition to a tired look of the upper face, upper eyelid excess (also known as eyelid ptosis) can contribute to an overall aged appearance.

As with many age-related concerns, upper eyelid excess is caused by thinning skin that loses elasticity. Collagen and elastin are naturally occurring proteins that provide youthful skin with volume and bounce. As these substances decline, the skin becomes weak and stretched, particularly around the eyes where the skin is already delicate. Stretched eyelids are further contributed to by rubbing and tugging on the skin from factors such as: irritation, applying make-up, placing contact lenses, frequently administering eye drops and tiredness.

Whilst there may be no significant measures that can be taken to prevent eyelid ptosis from occurring, making a conscious effort to avoid pulling on the eyelids as much as possible may help to reduce the likelihood of eyelid ptosis becoming a significant concern. However, for those who wish to restore a relaxed look and refresh the appearance of the eyes, Mr Waseem Bhat may recommend a surgical procedure known as Upper Blepharoplasty. During the operation Mr Bhat trims away excess skin from the upper eyelid, providing long lasting rejuvenation of the eye area, which may positively impact the upper face.
