Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure focused on rejuvenating the appearance of the eyelids. It addresses excess skin, fat, or muscle around the eyes, and aims to create a more youthful and refreshed look. This procedure can be performed on either the upper or lower eyelid, or a combination of both, removing droopy skin, reducing puffiness, and correcting bags under the eyes.

Mr Waseem Bhat uses the most suitable techniques depending on your specific concerns. For the upper eyelids, incisions are typically made along the natural crease to remove excess skin and fat. Lower eyelid surgery may involve incisions just below the lash line or inside the lower lid to redistribute or remove excess fat and skin. In some cases, a transconjunctival approach (inside the lower lid) is used to address fat pockets without external incisions.

Expected side effects will be discussed at the initial consultation, although it’s common to experience swelling and discomfort. Recovery time varies but generally allows for a return to normal activities within a week or two. During recovery, it’s crucial to follow post-operative instructions given by Mr Bhat, which may include using prescribed eye drops, applying cold compresses to reduce swelling, and avoiding strenuous activities.

Long-term aftercare involves protecting the eyes from sun exposure and diligent skincare as advised by Mr Bhat and his team. Results typically become more noticeable as swelling disappears, revealing a more rejuvenated and rested appearance around the eyes. As with any surgery, attending follow-up appointments is vital to monitor healing progress and address any concerns for optimal and satisfying outcomes. These are typically made at 1 week, 6 weeks and 3 months after surgery.

Frequently asked questions

Patients seeking blepharoplasty are typically concerned with an ageing look around the eye area. Droopy eyelids and eye bags often provide particular concern, producing an appearance that is tired. Youthful improvements to this area of the face can impact the appearance as a whole, helping to revitalise both the mid and upper face.

Mr Bhat will assess your medical history at an in-depth pre-procedure consultation. He will also perform thorough eye exams and discuss your goals. The procedure is carried out using precise techniques, and post-op care is always provided. Taking these steps ensures your blepharoplasty procedure is as safe as it can be.

The eye area is particularly delicate, and will often be more sensitive than other areas of the face. During the consultation, we will decide whether a local or general anaesthetic will be the most appropriate form of pain relief. Whichever method is used, the entire area will be completely numb.

Until your first follow-up appointment (1 week) you should wipe around your eyes gently with a soft wash cloth. When you see Mr Bhat he will say if showering is advisable, depending on how the wounds are healing.

Blepharoplasty aims to rejuvenate the eyelids by reducing sagging skin, puffiness, and under eye bags. This results in a more rested, youthful, and refreshed appearance to the upper face.
